Rumours of divorce reform

Media speculation over imminent consultation

  • There was plenty of speculation in the national media over the weekend that the Government is preparing a consultation on the introduction of no-fault divorce.

The story originated on the Buzzfeed news site which stated that the Justice Secretary, David Gauke, is preparing a consultation paper to be announced at some unspecified time in the near future. According to the story, the sole legal ground for divorce would remain irretrievable breakdown but there would be no need to provide one of these five reasons currently required.

At the time of writing the Ministry of Justice had not responded to the reports.
